Gary Alan Bass, MD, MSc, MBA, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics, as well as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Traumatology, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgery. He serves as Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Section Chief of Emergency Surgery at Pennsylvania Hospital, and directs the International Observerships Program while co-directing the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.  

Dr. Bass chairs the Research Committee of the European Society for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES). He founded the Center for Emergency Surgery Outcomes Research (CESOR), an international collaborative dedicated to multicenter, data-driven evaluations of emergency surgical care. 

His research, spanning over 140 publications, cited over 5000 times, applies pragmatic multinational cohort designs, advanced causal inference, and implementation science to clarify practice–outcome relationships in emergency general surgery. He pioneered the snapshot audit methodology, which has enrolled more than 8,000 patients across six continents and informed clinical guideline development. Ongoing and planned projects examine patient-reported outcomes, targeted trial emulation, and system-level quality improvement across diverse health systems. Dr. Bass is open to collaboration.
