Dr. Qi Long, in collaboration with Dr. Mayur Naik in the Department of Computer and Information Science at Penn and Dr. Ravi Parikh at Emory, has been awarded funding from NIH/NIBIB to advance neurosymbolic AI for smart and trustworthy healthcare.

In this project, the research team will develop Med-Scallop, a novel AI framework and associated open-access software tool based on the emerging paradigm of neurosymbolic AI. Med-Scallop can be used to harness the power of rich yet complex electronic health record data to enhance clinical decision-making while providing clinically meaningful explanations. This work represents a new, transformative approach to leverage the benefits of both deep learning models and interpretable symbolic AI models without suffering their limitations and to make clinical AI more trustworthy.

The Penn team also includes Dr. Marilyn Schapira, Professor of Medicine, who will co-lead with Dr. Ravi Parikh, a mixed-methods research study assessing clinical validity and usability of explanations generated by the AI models.
