Dr. Yong Chen and his center CHASE (Center for Health AI and Synthesis of Evidence) at the University of Pennsylvania have been awarded funding for Using Real-World Data to Derive Common Data Elements for Alzheimer’s Disease and AD-Related Dementias Research Through Ontological Innovation (ReCARDO). Supported by a $27.2 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), the initiative includes leverage electronic health records, claims, mobile apps, and wearable devices to accelerate discoveries in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Dr. Chen is an MPI of this R24, who will lead the Penn team with co-Investigator Dr. David Wolk, Professor of Neurology, Chief of the Division of Cognitive Neurology, and Director of the NIA-funded Penn Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. The initiative will be led by the contact PI Dr. Guo-Qiang (GQ) Zhang (UT Health), and MPIs Zoe Arvanitakis (Rush University)Licong Cui (UT Health)Hongfang Liu (UT Health) and Ronald C. Petersen (Mayo Clinic). Dr. Chen will guide Penn’s contributions in the critical tasks of data quality assessment and reliable evidence generation. His team will contribute to the identification of key research questions, evaluate the feasibility and reproducibility of studies, and advance common data element development.

By strengthening data standards and integration, the Penn team will play a vital role in building a national research network designed to transform how Alzheimer’s disease is studied.
