The Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics is proud to celebrate Kevin B. Johnson, and Li Shen—faculty in the Division of Informatics—on their induction as an American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) Distinguished Fellow and ACMI Fellow, respectively. These honors, recognizing their outstanding contributions to biomedical informatics and health data science, were presented to them at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 2024 Annual Symposium.
Kevin B. Johnson , MD, MS, FAAP, FAMIA, FACMI, the David L. Cohen University Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Computer and Information Science, Pediatrics, and Science Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, was named a Distinguished Fellow of the ACMI on November 10, 2024 at a ceremonial dinner during the AMIA 2024 Annual Symposium held in San Francisco. Johnson is one of only 20 fellows to receive this prestigious distinction since its inception in 2020.
Johnson served as the ACMI President from 2023-2024 and is the current Vice President of Applied Informatics for the University of Pennsylvania Health System and the Director of the Artificial Intelligence for Ambulatory Care (AI4AI) Lab. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Stanford University, he is an internationally recognized scholar for his work in clinical information technology, particularly in e-prescribing, computer-based documentation, and AI-enabled patient-clinician interaction.
Li Shen, PhD, FAIMBE, FACMI, Professor of Informatics and Deputy Director of the Division of Informatics, was also inducted as an ACMI Fellow—one of twenty-five new fellows to receive the honor—at the AMIA 2024 Annual Symposium. Shen is is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Biomedical Informatics (IBI) and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics. He also serves as Associate Director for Bioinformatics at the IBI, Faculty Director of the IBI Bioinformatics Core, and Co-Director of the AI2D Center. Shen obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Dartmouth College.
“I’m thrilled to welcome this very diverse group of talented and nationally known informatics experts,” stated Johnson of the 2024 FACMI inductees. “It has become extremely competitive to be elected into ACMI. This group of experts stood out in terms of their reach and impact.”
