Research Associate

Sagnik Bhadury is a Research Associate in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. He completed his postdoctoral training in Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan, where he developed statistical methodology and bioinformatic tools for cancer research, with a focus on translating tumor microenvironment interaction patterns into interpretable biomarkers. He earned his PhD in Biostatistics from the University of Louisville and previously taught for two and a half years as an Adjunct Professor at Amity University Kolkata.
His research builds on Bayesian hierarchical models; sparsity-inducing priors such as the spike-and-slab and horseshoe; Gaussian graphical models that vary over space and time; graph-on-vector regression; spatial Gaussian processes; and causal mediation. He applies these methods to integrate multi-scale, multi-modal data from digital pathology, multiplexed tissue imaging, and genomics for precision medicine. At the University of Michigan, his work spanned analysis, image processing, and methods development for 2D and 3D multiplexed immunofluorescence, H&E, spatial transcriptomics, MRI, and RNA-seq data across pancreatic (IPMN-PDAC), colorectal, breast, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinoma and lower-grade glioma. He also integrated histomorphological and transcriptomic regulatory features in non-small cell lung cancer (LUAD-LUSC) for biomarker discovery.
More recently, he has developed statistical methods for interrogating what pathology foundation models and sparse autoencoders encode, including how much biological signal an H&E tile embedding recovers, which learned features carry that signal, and whether those features persist under direct intervention. At Penn, his work centers on clinical trial design and longitudinal modeling of repeated biomarker and outcome data, including joint models, competing risks, and multi-omics integration.
