About SC-TRM

Penn PSOM has been at the forefront of translational research in medicine. Electronic health records (EHRs), together with other real-world healthcare data, provide rich opportunities to advance translational research and improve healthcare practice.

The Statistical Center for Translational Research in Medicine (SC-TRM) was established in July 2020 as a key hub for translational biostatistics at the Perelman School of Medicine.

Goals for Translational Research

In the current era of increasingly rich and complex data sources and rapidly evolving analytic tools, including artificial intelligence, quantitative methodology plays an increasingly integral role in scientific discovery, not only in answering scientific questions, but also in identifying emerging opportunities, formulating important new questions, and defining how those questions can be rigorously investigated. SC-TRM serves as both a methodological innovation resource and a collaborative research partner for Penn’s clinical and translational research by developing, evaluating, and applying innovative statistical methods and tools. SC-TRM helps identify translational research opportunities to advance disease diagnosis, treatment, and patient care, develop new approaches when existing tools are inadequate, and harness emerging data sources and technologies to address scientific questions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to investigate.

SC-TRM is deeply committed to cultivating the next generation of clinical and translational research leaders. A particular priority is supporting early-stage investigators in transforming promising scientific ideas into competitive research proposals and sustainable research programs.  Through sustained methodological collaboration and mentorship, SC-TRM helps build the skills and expertise needed to become successful independent researchers.
