Mingyao Li, PhD, Professor of Biostatistics, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Michael P. Nusbaum Graduate Student Mentoring Award from the Biomedical Graduate Studies (BGS).
The Nusbaum Award recognizes exceptional dedication to graduate (PhD) student mentoring and honors faculty who exemplify the guidance, engagement, and commitment necessary to support trainees in achieving their scholarly potential.
Since becoming chair of the Biostatistics program in the Graduate Group in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (GGEB) in 2019, Dr. Li has played a vital role in supporting graduate students across the program. Her commitment to mentorship is reflected in her active engagement with students throughout their training, including regularly attending dissertation defenses and maintaining a strong presence at key milestones in students’ academic journeys.
This hands-on approach to mentorship reflects the values established by Michael P. Nusbaum during his time as director of BGS. Established in his honor in 2017, the award recognizes faculty who provide exceptional guidance and support to PhD students as they navigate their research and academic careers.
